Male antagonist

Character Analysis - Male antagonist

Antagonist: A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something.

The killer in our film opening is an adult male. We chose this character because it conforms to the psychological/slasher conventions of the antagonist being male and older than the victims. The audience never fully sees the appearance of this character because he is always framed in shaky shots and this adds to the atmosphere of mystery and sinister suspense. The fact that he cannot be fully seen is effective because it makes the audience fear him more and creates a sense of the unknown. He wears dark clothes and this establishes him clearly as the antagonist in contrast to the female victim.

In our character research, we looked a lot at the killers in the slasher genre because they tend to be male and conform to the conventions of an antagonist. However, we didn't base our own character on one particular person but instead took a mixture of different villains in order to create our own.

Conventions:
  • Adult
  • Male
  • Killer
  • Mysterious
  • Dark clothing
Typically, films of the horror genre feature a male character as the villain because they are more intimidating and don't fit in with the age range of the target audience or other characters, so therefore seem more sinister and out of place.
Examples of films that use male protagonists that conform to these conventions:

  • Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Friday the thirteenth
  • Se7en
  • Scream
  • Halloween
