Pre-production experimenting

PRE-PRODUCTION EXPERIMENTING

Camera angles and movement

Before starting the filming the process for our film opening we, experimented with a variety of camera angles in order to work out what would work best in our film opening, and fit the conventions of the horror and psychological thriller the best. We looked at close up shots from the film we took most of our inspiration from, the bone collector. In the film we could see they used close ups to present the cab drivers trophy item, and we then took inspiration from this and implemented in our opening, as on the right. This is an
example of pre production experimenting because it shows how we took inspiration from existing successful films and used the camera angles they used to experiment with our own.

We also took framing inspiration from this shot, because as you can see in the top picture, the bone collector had the camera at an angle which framed the wing mirror in a perfect position that allowed the audience to see both the taxi meter (for context), and the creepy trinket hanging from the mirror. We implemented this in our own framing, and framed the shot in a similar way, so that the audience could get perception on the drivers trophy victim collectable. The human hair, dolls head, tape measure and candle all help benefit the Mise en scene of the opening and add tension to the scene

Voice and Sound
In regards to the voice used within our film opening, we decided not to use dialogue. This was due to the lack of dialogue used in horror films, as often silence is a convention of the horror genre. Also as we only had 2 characters, we didn't think dialogue was appropriate due to their situation.

As for sound, we took inspiration of sound effects from a variety of films that we deconstructed, including se7en, the bone collector and the dark knight. We had to experiment with multiple sound effects in order to create the right atmosphere, especially during the climatic point of the film opening. This included looking through a variety of sound effects and experimenting with them, until finding ones that best suit the image on screen, as we wanted to create parallel sounds.
