Horror movie villains
Having decided that our own film opening would be horror, I decided to research some of the most well known horror films and the antagonist that features in them. This enabled us to build a picture of what the antagonist of our own product would be like and also gave us some inspiration and ideas to use and adapt.
1) Pamela Voorhees (Jason) - Friday the thirteenth
Jason has been rated as one of the scariest horror movie villains and is an ionic character. He conforms to many conventions such as using a weapon with phallic symbolism (machete) and is out for revenge. This character wears a mask to conceal their identity and also has some supernatural qualities. However, one major convention that is challenged is the gender of the villain. At the end of the film, the killer is actually revealed to be a woman and therefore subverts some stereotypes.
2) Norman Bates - Psycho
3) Hannibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal Lecter is a charming and clever, yet monstrous and evil character. He is extremely complicated which further adds to his mysterious nature. He seemingly doesn't have an ulterior motive and just kills for fun, which makes him seem even more scary. However, importantly, the audience is also invited to quite like his character in a strange way because he has appeal. He has a normal appearance but is seen wearing the mask (pictured) at points to emphasise that he is a dangerous murderer and a cannibal.
4) Michael Myers - Halloween
Michael Myers is another classic slasher movie villain and follows all conventions of a typical killer. he is male, has supernatural elements, uses weapon with phallic symbolism, wears a mask, has psychological issues and kills teenagers. He is a very dar, mysterious and sinister figure who creates a real sense of fear.
5) Jack Torrance - The Shining
This notorious film features Jack Torrance as the antagonist who uses an axe on his victims. He isn't very sinister or mysterious as seen with previous villains, but instead seems quite mad and a strange character. He speaks the famous "Here's Johhny!" line, making him very well known.

2) Norman Bates - Psycho
Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho features Norman Bates as the antagonist whose evil nature isn't revealed until the end of the film. He doesn't have any supernatural qualities, but does conform to the convention of the character being psychologically disturbed and out for revenge. The film itself influenced the makers of many of the most modern well known horror films. Norman Bates is so well known and features in the sequels of the film, with Anthony Hopkins expertly portraying his 'psycho' character.
