Pretty little liars- Spencer Hastings Character Analysis

Costume
Out of the 4 main characters in the teen horror series, Spencer Hastings style is the most preppy and sophisticated. She often wears sweater vests, dresses, typical uniform style plaid skirts, blazers and jumpers. Her jewellery is kept to a minimal and she only has piercings in her ears, in which she wears small classy studs. For shoes, spencer mainly wears ballet flats, and will wear a small heel for events. As apposed to Aria's quirky boots, Hannah's heels or Emily's trainers. Her fashion reflects her personality as spencer is often the brains behind the operations and plans the girls put in motion. She is an A+ student, class president and know it all. Therefore her preppy fashion sense represents these personality traits.

Hair and Makeup
Spencer's makeup is very natural and subtle. She keeps makeup to a minimal and often wears baby pinks and nudes to represent her studious and sophisticated personality. She is not like Hannah or Aria who wear lots of eye makeup to show off gothic or girly traits, instead she wears a small amount of makeup to simply cover her imperfections, rather than trying to make a fashion statement through makeup. Her hair is also kept very sophisticated and classy. Her usual look is loose waves that look very natural and effortless. However the side braid shows how she is perhaps one of the purer girls as it has connotations with childlike features. Although she may be one of the purest, she is also one of the most mature girls. She is the smartest, has a tendency to gain boys attention, and later in the series develops a drug addiction.

Representation

Spencer is a wealthy, beautiful, popular and extremely intelligent teenager. Throughout the show her ability to think in situations continuously helps the group of girls protect themselves from the stalker 'A' who is consistently putting them in danger. However spencer develops a drug addition which becomes the characters fatal flaw. Her addiction to perfect grades, and fear of her stalker causes her to develop a drug addiction and therefore have a gradual mental breakdown (left). Her perfect image is faulted due to this, although once she overcomes this, she is able to continue being her usual self and feeling superior in her own knowledge. She also develops long term relationships throughout the show and battles for parents attention due to her 'perfect' sister Melissa.
