The woman in back opening scene analysis
Sound
Non diegetic music is added in post production and increases in volume as the scene gets more dramatic. This same sequence of music is used throughout the film when a child's about to die, creating a sense of foreboding, as when this sequence is played, the audience know what is about to happen. The diegetic sounds of china tea sets clinking together has connotations of dolls, which are associated with the conventions of the horror genre as being something eerie and creepy.
The music sequence increases to create a crescendo, which makes the music louder and harder to listen to and increases tension within the scene to frighten and make the audience feel an initial sense of fear within the very first scene. The sound is parallel to the visual image as the creepy tea party, the girls crushing the dolls heads, the jumping out of the window and final shot where the woman in black is seen are all eerie images that fit with the sound sequence.
